Surface repairs

Impact damage: chips, splinters. Always keep all the pieces. It might seem unlikely, but it's usually neater to build up a surface by gluing back the splinters which came out than by trying to grain match filler. If you haven't got the bits, the damage can still be discreetly filled and re-finished.

Dents and Bruises. If there is no wood missing, it is often possible to press or swell out dents and just repair the finish.

White marks/Water marks/heat marks. Can usually be removed or improved depending on the severity. The marks on this table are beyond economical repair!
Burns/scorches. Unfortunately, it's  difficult to do more than just sand them out and refinish the area. This leaves a slight dip but generally looks better than a burn.

Scuffs/scratches. If they're just in the finish, can usually be polished out/cut back.  If they're through to the wood, it's normally possible to do a localised repair which will make them less noticeable. N.B. bad scratches which run across the grain can be very difficult to repair without sanding them out but they can still be improved.
